Six-string bass viol based on an instrument by Girolamo and Antonio Amati from 1611. The original instrument was part of a consort of five viols that belonged to the Medici family, as recorded in the 1700 inventory. To date, only two violas from this consort are known to exist.
This instrument has a two-piece, carved top. The back is a single piece maple. The back is distinctive for its carved arching, similar to a cello, combined with the fold typical of viola da gambas.
The string length is 68 cm.
